These curvy girl style tips are near to my heart. I have been a curvy girl all of my life. Finding clothes that flatter us curvier women can be tricky. Even in today’s world where curves are being celebrated, it can be disheartening to try something on because you love the way it looked online only to find out it doesn’t work for you because of the way it hugs your curves. The tips below will help guide your style choices and provide you with some curvy girl style inspiration.

Tip #1
Buy clothes that fit you. No that’s not a joke. Women tend to buy clothes that are unflattering and loose because they are self-conscious of certain areas of their bodies. One of the most unflattering things that a curvy woman can do is buy oversized clothing, but that tends to be our first instinct.
For example, many women try to hide their round bellies by wearing oversized, shapeless T-shirts. This actually has the opposite effect. It may hide the belly to some degree but it also causes the body to look shapeless and therefore larger overall.
Just look around next time you go shopping (not in judgment, just in observation) and you will notice this. However, the opposite also happens often, which is wearing clothes that are too tight. Clothing that is too tight and hugs every bulge is as unflattering as the oversized T-shirt or jacket, but it’s so tempting to try to squeeze into those cute jeans we used to fit or that really hot dress.
The point is that we all have to work with what we have. So instead of either trying to hide it or trying to deny it, try to find clothes that fit you the way they are meant to. Look for clothes that have tailoring and some form to them so that they give your body some definition. You want clothes that provide structure while skimming your curves. Things like empire waist or wrap dresses, or a blazer with an hourglass shape and darting, are flattering because they help define a waist.
Tip #2
Invest in some good shapewear. This is one area in your wardrobe that deserves a good investment if you are a curvy woman. Something like a Spanx bodysuit will be your best friend when you want to look your best and bolster your confidence. It doesn’t hide your curves, it simply smoothes the bumps. The curves we love, the lumps and bumps not so much. A good piece of shapewear is a game-changer
Tip #3
Avoid large, bold prints. Large prints look…large. Instead, opt for smaller more flattering prints. If you do want to incorporate a larger print into your wardrobe try it on something like a blazer with a flattering cut rather with a solid color shirt underneath, rather than on a dress or skirt.
Tip #4
Don’t wear horizontal stripes. I love a good navy nautical tee as much as the rest of you, but the fact is that they are not always flattering if you have a large chest or carry a lot of upper body weight. The lines create an illusion of width. The eye naturally follows the horizontal lines and rather than looking longer and leaner we look wider.
Tip #5
Wear high-waisted pants that have a hem that reaches your ankle or an inch below. The high waist and ankle-length hem make your body look like a longer leaner line. They elongate the leg which takes the focus off of our mid section. Right now looser fitting pants with a wider hem are really on-trend. These pants can be much more comfortable than the previously sought-after skinny jean, so jump on this trend and enjoy the comfort!
Tip #6
Wear shoes with pointed toes or clear straps and small heels. Pointed-toe shoes or clear straps give your foot a look of length. If you are wearing a skirt it continues the line of your leg which is very flattering. If you are wearing pants or jeans the extra room where your foot is seen can create the illusion of more length.

Tip #7
Avoid Pleats. Unless you love them and then by all means wear pleats. I love pleated skirts. So much so that I have two in my wardrobe although I don’t wear them very often. I love the feel of them-all girly and swooshy-but I don’t love how they look around my roundish belly. Pleats add volume which makes the mid section look fuller. Flatter material that skims curves can create a slenderizing effect whereas pleats add width.
Tip #8
Find details in clothing that accentuate your strongest assets and minimize your weakest. For example, if you are large chested V necklines are flattering. If you are larger in the stomach try shirts and dresses that have ruching over that area. If you have large upper arms find shirts with flattering sleeves. If you have great legs invest in some nice skirts. Take an inventory of your best parts and play them up. This is going to draw attention to these areas and redirect it from areas that we are less confident about.
Tip #9
Monochromatic looks in darker colors can be very slimming. I often wear black outfits because it’s a confident color for me. I wear a lot of colors as well, but when I wear an all-black outfit I don’t have to think about it. I just know it will work. Jumpsuits are really popular right now and they provide an instant stylish monochromatic look. Just make sure to get one that cinches at the waist or under the bust so that you are still giving shape to your body. You want to avoid anything straight and boxy.
Tip #10
Avoid materials like lycra that hug your body. Instead, opt for thicker material that will lay well. For example, rather than a Lycra T, try a cotton blend T. Instead of leggings opt for jeans or linen.

Tip #11
Rock whatever you wear!! Really. Style is so personal and it represents who we are. It’s an expression of ourselves. So whatever it is that makes you happy, wear it. Dance in it. Live in it.
The above are just some general curvy girl style tips that are meant to inspire you. Whatever you wear, you are beautiful because you are unique.
