Hello, my middle-aged friends! So here it is…..we may not like it, but we need to be shaving our faces. As women, we may not be growing scruffy beards, but as we age and our hormones fluctuate, we tend to grow more vellus (peach fuzz) hair on our faces and unwanted hair in various areas. We have probably all experienced the nasty chin hair that feels like wire and seemingly pops out of nowhere. So lets talk face shaving 101 for middle aged women.
Why do we need to shave our faces?
Reason #1: To Look Better
If you are still confused by this I invite you to grab a mirror and go and stand in real light. For example in front of a window during the day. Move your face around and as you do you will see all of the peach fuzz growing on your face and chin, possibly even down your neck.
To be direct-it’s not attractive. Shaving your face is a simple way to make yourself look more attractive. It’s nice because it’s subtle. No one else may even notice that you are doing it and yet you look better and your skin is smoother. Let them wonder why your skin is suddenly more radiant!
Reason #2: To Exfoliate your skin
When we use a face razor or a tool made for face shaving it not only shaves all of our peach fuzz but it also exfoliates the top layer of our skin. This removes dead skin cells and allows new glowing skin to shine, giving your face the aforementioned radiance. Who doesn’t want that?
What do you use to shave your face?
I began noticing that I was growing more and more hair on my face around age 32. I was in despair, trying to pluck a thousand tiny hairs off of my cheeks and under my chin every day. Then I discovered that there are actually tools made for women specifically for the purpose of removing facial hair.
The two tools I recommend are the small face razors you can buy at any drugstore or off of Amazon, and the DermaFlash. These are the two tools I have tried and the safest. I prefer the Dermaflash because there is virtually no chance of me cutting my face, however for years I used a variety of face-shaving razors from the drugstore.

How often do I shave my face?
This is a personal judgment call. You want to shave often enough to keep your skin smooth, but not so often that you damage your skin barrier. I tend to shave once every other week. By that time I usually have some peach fuzz but it’s not to the point that I think it looks very noticeable. You will be able to tell when you need to shave.
Will my hair grow back darker and thicker?
In a word-NO. I’m not sure where this myth comes from but it’s just not true. I shave my face, my arms, and my legs. Does the hair grow back? -yes. Does it grow back thicker and darker? -no.

I’m a strong believer that if there are easy, healthy, ways we can improve the way we look as middle-aged women then we should consider them. Shaving is an easy, fairly fast, and inexpensive way to help ourselves look more polished and our skin more radiant. Once you give it a try I think you will find it’s a self care ritual worth having as a part of your beauty routine.
