Every woman needs a collection of good makeup tips and tricks in her arsenal. Things that she has learned to do that just make the process of “getting ready” easier and go more smoothly. Tricks that help her look her best. Here are a list of makeup tips and tricks that will take your makeup game to the next level. These makeup tips and tricks are specifically for women with mature skin.
THE SKIN
Tip #1 Start with Gua Sha and or facial massage
Starting your routine with gua sha or facial massage gets the blood flowing under your skin. This results in a healthier complexion and it helps with lymph drainage which is the underlying cause for a lot of our “puffiness” first thing in the morning.
This does not have to be a long and involved routine. You can do the whole thing in a matter of a few minutes and it makes a difference. You can test this by doing it to one side of your face and then comparing it to the side you haven’t done. If you don’t know where to start with this then I suggest looking up routines on YouTube or TikTok. I will also attach my YouTube video here for you during which I give a quick demonstration.
Tip #2 Moisturize
The most simple step but also arguably the most important. Hydrated skin always looks better under makeup. As we get older and lose collagen and elastin we also lose the natural moisture in our skin. It’s important to be caring for our skin every day to keep it in the best possible condition. If you haven’t been able to find a good moisturizer that works under makeup, I understand. This part can be tricky. Let me give you two suggestions at two different price points.
Both of these moisturizers are filled with good skin-loving ingredients, and neither of them pill under my makeup.
Tip #3. Use a Makeup Primer
If you have always skipped this step try adding it in and see the difference it makes. A good primer does several things. It’s going to give the appearance of smooth, poreless skin, while also adhering to your makeup and helping it to last all day.
There are a lot of inexpensive drugstore primers out there. One of my favorites is the Elf Hydro Grip Primer. For a more flawless look, give primer a try.
THE EYES
Tip #4 Tight line your upper lid with a soft black eyeliner
Using a black eyeliner to tight line your upper lid creates the illusion of having thicker and fuller lashes on your upper lid. It brings out your eyes without looking tacky or overdone.
Tip #5. Tight line your bottom lid with a Nude eyeliner
The purpose of tight lining your lower lid with a nude eyeliner is to make them appear wider and awake. It brightens up that area.
Tip #6 Apply an Eyelid Primer
This one is a game-changer ladies. Don’t skip this step if you want your makeup to stay in place on mature eyelids. Especially if you have a lot of excess skin. An eyelid primer will keep your eyeshadow exactly where you want it to be. Otherwise, the oils on your eyelids cause the shadow to move around and if you have a lot of excess skin as I do the eyeshadow ends up sitting back in the crevices of my excess skin instead of on my eyelid.
Tip #7 Use a light neutral shadow
As we get older and the skin around our eyes gets looser, darker shadows can be unflattering. On the other hand, using a neutral shade in a lighter color can help your eyes to look larger and more awake.
Tip #8 Concealer on the brow bone
This is done for the same purpose as the last two tips/suggestions. Using a concealer that is just slightly lighter than your skin tone, along your brow bone, gives the illusion of a lifted eye. It also adds brightness helping your eyes to look wider.
Tip #9 Curl Your Eyelashes
Curling your eyelashes helps the eyes look wider and more awake. It opens them up which is very helpful as they tend to recess as we age.
THE FACE
Tip #10 Use concealer sparingly under the eyes
With concealer, less is more. We want to be careful to help cover our faults without making them look worse. Applying makeup to the under eye area is tricky on mature skin. If you have bags under your eyes you want to be careful to only add concealer to hollow between your bag and your eye. This creates the illusion of the skin being on one level. You want to avoid putting concealer over the actual bag or loose skin as this will make it stand out even more.
If dark circles are your concern, then first use a color corrector on the under eye area and then conceal them sparingly.
Tip #11 Apply foundation in a light layer
Again, less is more. What we want to accomplish here is a light layer to even out our skin tone. We want consistent color across our face. If we have any redness or age spots that show through we can always go in with another layer over those areas. For the most part, a more natural, skin like foundation is more flattering as we get older.
Tip #12 Use Cream Blush and Bronzer
Creams tend to look more natural on the skin than powders. Rather than looking like it’s sitting on top of your skin a cream gives the illusion of a natural flush and radiance. It also does not cake in the creases and lines of our faces the way that powder does.
Tip #13 Use a hydrating setting spray
Using a hydrating setting spray allows you to provide your skin with a dose of moisture after your makeup has been applied and it also keeps your makeup in place throughout the day. Its an easy way to keep your makeup looking more natural and flawless as you wear it throughout the day.
Tip #14 Use lips gloss 2 shades darker than your normal lips
Instead of lipstick, try lip gloss. Lip stick tends to be dry and settle into lip lines whereas lip gloss gives the illusion of larger, plumper lips. You want it to be a couple of shades darker than your normal lip color to give yourself some color and help your lips stand out but still look natural.
In Conclusion
I hope that you will give these makeup tips and tricks a try. If you are just starting out with makeup then just start with one or two and go from there. They will make a difference in your appearance, and we women know that when we look good we feel more confident.
