I have a deep love of skincare. It started in my early forties and continues to be an obsession. I have tried a lot of skincare products and have had varying routines over the years. In this blog post I am sharing with you my current morning skincare routine for my mature skin. I love each of these products and can speak to their quality due to months (in some cases, years) of having used them on my own skin.
If you have mature skin, I hope you find this post inspirational and helpful. All the products I am discussing will be linked for you so you can easily find them.
For your reference as you read the post, I am a forty-six-year-old woman. My skin is very dry (especially during the winter months) and also acne prone. It’s a difficult combination to manage. This is another reason I am loving the routine below. None of these products irritate my skin or cause breakouts.
One other note on the products you will be reading about–I also prefer my skincare to be affordable. That’s not to say that I never splurge on luxury skincare. Simply, as a rule, if I am going to have something be a regular part of my routine I want to be able to afford to repurchase it over and over.
Step 1:
The Cleanse. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser that will not strip your moisture barrier or dry out your skin. I prefer my cleansers to feel creamy and luxurious on my skin, but since they are washed away almost immediately I also don’t want to pay a lot for them. My cleanser of choice is the Vani Cream Unscented Gentle Facial Cleanser. This cleanser meets all of the above criteria and at only $8.99 a bottle repurchasing on repeat is not a problem.
Step 2:
The essence step. A facial essence is simply a sort of ‘in between’ of a toner and a serum. Although this is an extra step I really enjoy it and I feel it adds benefit to my routine. The one I am currently using in my morning skincare routine is the Timeless HA-C Spray. I use the Orange spray (which does have a citrus scent) but they do have a couple of other options such as Cucumber and Rose. This spray boasts and impressive list of ingredients including Matrixyl 3000, Aloe Barbadensis, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, and Orange Extract.
Step 3:
The antioxidant. In my morning routine, I prefer to use a Vitamin C serum that has L Ascorbic Acid in it. L Ascorbic acid is the form of Vitamin C that has the most research behind it showing it to be effective for the skin because it’s an active form of Vitamin C that is bioavailable to our bodies. Some Vitamin C serums do irritate my skin, or cause a sticky/tacky feeling on my skin that bothers me. The one that I have been using for a long time now and love is the 20% Vitamin C + E Ferulic Acid Serum from Timeless. If you have tried other Vitamin C serums and haven’t liked them, I would try this one.
If your skin is really sensitive to Vitamin C, or you just don’t enjoy it, I would recommend trying Coenzyme Q10. This is an antioxidant that has many of the same amazing benefits of Vitamin C but is much more gentle. It’s also hydrating which I love. I use this antioxidant in my routine, but it is in my nighttime face routine. My two favorites are the following: Timeless Coenzyme Q 10 or Q10 serum From the Inkey List. The Q10 serum from the Inkey List is only $9.99 and it’s fabulous.
Step 4:
Serums. This is the step where you can easily add extra layers of ingredients to your skincare routine depending on what your unique needs are.
I am currently using two serums, also from Timeless Skincare. The first one is the Matrixyl Synthe 6 Serum. Their website says the following about this product “with six critical skin-building essentials, this powerful polypeptide targets pronounced wrinkles and expression lines by stimulating collagen production.” I mean who doesn’t want that?
The second serum I’m using in this step is the Timeless B5 Hydration Serum. With great ingredients like Calcium Pantothenate and Hyaluronic acid this serum is moisturizing and anti-inflammatory. The reason I personally love it the most is because it helps keep my breakouts under control. My skin always feels and looks better when I’m using this in the morning.
Step 5
The moisturizer. My favorite moisturizer for the last few months in my morning skincare routine, since I discovered it, is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream. Just trust me on this one. I discovered this when I borrowed it from my daughter one night when she was over. I didn’t expect much to be honest. I had never been into Kiehl’s products, but this–this changed my mind. This is formulated with Squalane and Glacial Glycoprotein. It’s so lightweight and soaks right into my skin. Honestly, it soaks in better than any other moisturizer I have used, while still leaving my skin soft and moisturized.
If the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream costs more than you want to spend on a moisturizer I understand and I’ve got you covered. In that case, I recommend the CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizer. This is a very affordable alternative and an excellent product. It contains ceramides, Niacinamide and Hyaluronic Acid.
Step 6
The sunblock. There are so many good SPFs out there. Find the one that works the best for you so that you can make it a regular part of your everyday routine. For me, that’s the Drmtlgy Universal Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44. I have used this for several years, and although I have tried others, I always go back to this one. It has a nice neutral tint that evens out my skin. I use only this on days where I am only looking for minimal coverage.
Check out my video below on how I use this in my everyday makeup routine.
